Engagement rate calculator
Most calculators make you pick a denominator. This runs both, which is how two people stop arguing about the same post.
The basis most media kits quote.
The basis that tells you how the people who saw it responded.
What the engagement was made of
Likes are cheap. Comments, shares and saves take effort and are weighted more heavily by most ranking systems, so a post that is almost all likes is weaker than its headline rate suggests.
Runs in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing is stored.
How it works
Engagement rate = total interactions divided by your chosen base, times 100. What changes the answer most is the base, not the arithmetic, so this runs both at once.
By followers is what media kits and agency reports usually quote, and it is the right basis for comparing two accounts. By reach tells you how the people who actually saw the post responded, which is the right basis for judging one post.
The two can differ wildly. A post that travels beyond an account's following looks extraordinary on a follower basis and ordinary on a reach basis, so say which you used whenever you quote a rate.
Reach beyond your following is the fourth number. Above 100% means the platform pushed the post to non-followers, which is usually the difference between a post that worked and one that merely pleased the people already following you.
Worked example
A post gets 4,200 likes, 180 comments, 95 shares and 320 saves, from an account with 85,000 followers, reaching 140,000 people. Interactions total 4,795. Against followers that is 5.64%; against reach it is 3.43%. Reach was 165% of the following, so the platform did push it outward.
Common questions
What is a good engagement rate?
Published benchmarks vary so much by platform, account size and category that quoting one figure would mislead you, and larger accounts almost always post lower rates than small ones. Compare against your own recent posts, or against specific competitor accounts measured on the same basis.
Should I divide by followers or by reach?
Followers for comparing accounts, reach for judging a post. Media kits usually use followers, so check which basis a creator used before comparing two rate cards.
Do saves and shares count as engagement?
They should. Most platforms weight saves and shares more heavily than likes in ranking, and they signal real intent, which is why this reports them separately.
Why is my engagement rate falling as I grow?
It usually does, and it is not necessarily a problem. Larger audiences hold more passive followers, and platforms show any single post to a smaller share of a big following. Watch total interactions alongside the rate.
Does this work for TikTok and YouTube?
Yes. On video platforms put views in the reach field, which is how most TikTok and YouTube engagement rates are quoted.
